Recycle that holiday wrapping paper!

Within the next day or so, you will be wrapping your gifts for the Holidays and unless you have a trick up your sleeve, you will be using paper wrapping paper. There are alternate “green” ways to wrap gifts without filling up our landfills with holiday wrapping paper and cute ways to decorate gifts and save money.

You can wrap with scarves, and simply tie up. Wrap a bottle of wine in a newspaper, forget the bows this year! Use anything from paper bags to leftover wallpaper, and cut out images from magazines, comics, children’s drawings or old greeting cards to give your package an artistic flair. Decorate the gift with sprigs of berries, branches, shells and pinecones. Tie on raffia or yarn to add to the décor! Put your gift(s) in a recycle bag that you buy from the grocery store, it might encourage them to use it.

OK, so the gifts have been opened and you see a room full of wrapping paper, what now?

After the holidays, use the wrapping paper to wrap your child’s books
Use wrapping paper to cover a cork board and hang on the wall.
Use the paper to cover the inside of the drawers or cabinets.
Keep your paper and re-use if not too wrinkled for gifts next year.
Give to local schools for crafts
Keep it in the garage or under the sink. Clean windows with crumbled up wrapping paper, it is great!
Use the paper to fill hats or boots
Use as placements when our kids eat or craft

So, enjoy your holidays with your family and friends, and when cleaning up, remember to recycle that old wrapping paper, it won’t take any time away from your festivities, and you will feel better helping out our environment!

A "Green" Fireworks show!

New Year's Eve is fast approaching and we all love to attend the parties, parades and watch the spectacular fireworks shows, seems to innocent right? Not so, New Year’s Eve fireworks can cause humans great health risks, not to mention animals, and our Mother Earth.

In July of 2009 scientists found that fireworks, although fun and usually free to watch, pose a great risk to human health. The smoke that is put out from fireworks can trigger asthma attacks, and sends toxic metals into the soil and water. Not only can the fireworks harm our lungs but the poisonous metal that makes the color white, is called Antimony and can harm the lungs, heart and stomach. Barium causes the green color in fireworks and can be toxic to the heart. Not only are fireworks bad for humans but of course, not good for our earth either. As you can imagine, all those metals flying through the air into our water and into our soil, takes its toll on our environment as well.

Scientists and researchers are working on a new generation of pyrotechnics. While still explosive and dramatic and fun, these fireworks produce less smoke and use fewer toxic metals that end up in soil and groundwater. We all know that not all people are on the eco-friendly fireworks bandwagon, but it would be great to encourage your neighborhood or area to go with the new Eco-friendly fireworks. They are a bit more pricey than the normal fireworks and it might be a little premature to expect your metroplex to use them yet, but now you know and you can help spread the word. You can contact the EPA to find out where to purchase.

Disneyland is on board as they do fireworks nightly. They are investigating cleaner burning fireworks and in 2004, Disney began using compressed air to launch fireworks at Disneyland in Anaheim and it reduces at least the issues of smoky particulates in the air and perchlorates in the water.

Although the eco-friendly fireworks will be hard to find at the present time, if you buy fireworks, ask for the low smoke fireworks, and make sure you follow firework safety tips.

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas…..

Our environment doesn’t take time off for the holidays, and neither should we!
Being “green” is a 365 day a year responsibility. There are many ways you can continue your environmentally friendly trends during this holiday season.

Let’s start with your tree. An artificial tree will last for many years, but when you are ready to replace it – what happens? It will end up in a land fill and last forever! Your best bet with a Christmas tree is to purchase a pine tree with the roots still intact. Then after the holidays, you can plant the tree outside and watch it grow! When purchasing the lights for your tree, remember to buy the LED ones. They cut down on the amount of electricity used.

Decorating the tree is fun and easy. You can use old ribbon laying around the house as garland, or pop some popcorn and gather the family for a popcorn stringing party! Have a contest for your kids and let them create ornaments using items you already have in the house (or that they find outside).

My Mom was green before being green was cool! I remember Christmas mornings at my house – we used a seam ripper to open our Christmas presents. My Mom was able to re-use wrapping paper for YEARS that way. If you don’t want to take it to that extreme, you can use the funny papers to wrap presents, or any section of the paper. Finish it off with a red bow – and wha-lah – a great wrapping job friendly to the environment! If you are having to ship presents this year – please avoid those styrofoam peanuts! Instead use old newspaper as package filler or do as a friend of mine does, save your children's Ziploc baggies and blow them up to use as cushions inside the boxes.

So many easy ways to stay “green”. E-mail cards rather than snail mail, online shopping rather than driving from mall to mall – just a little common sense goes a long way in helping Mother Earth!

If you don't know much about recycling, ask or do what we do and search the web! Don't forget to buy eco-friendly gifts as well this Holiday season!

Going GREEN This Halloween

Halloween is quickly approaching. And by all accounts, it is not a very eco-friendly holiday! It is estimated that Americans will spend close to 6 billion dollars on Halloween – on everything from expendable costumes and decorations to individually wrapped candy. So here are a few ideas for a “Green Halloween”……

Start with your costume. Some of the best costumes I had growing up were made from stuff we already had in the house. I remember three of my favorite Halloweens. I was a hobo, a ballerina and a scarecrow. All were easily made from items stuffed in the back of my closet. One year, I painted an old refrigerator box as a "Fruit Loops Cereal" box - and cut holes for my head and arms. (talk about getting good use out of a box - get a fridge, wear it, then recycle it!) Search the web for some great Halloween costume ideas, then shop the thrift stores, your closet – or even better- your parents or friends closets! You can then “recycle” the costume by donating them back to Goodwill or another thrift store.

Decorating for Halloween is fun, but keeping it simple is much better for the environment! Try to resist the urge to buy out the Halloween decorating aisle. Purchase just one or two high quality Halloween decorations and re-use them each year. Simple sheets turned into ghosts swaying in the breeze are sure to elicit many shrieks from trick or treaters. Cotton balls can be made into great spider webs and leaves and candles can be turned into a spooky fall arrangement. Turn most of the lights off in your house (save some energy) light some candles – and a fun and scary Halloween scene will be set.

If you carve a pumpkin – be sure to save the seeds and roast them! They are delicious, just remember to add a little salt. The “guts” of the pumpkin can be turned into pumpkin puree and used to make delicious pies, bread, muffins and pancakes. Certainly you are into natural beauty - check out these organic skin treatments using pumpkin! And don’t throw your pumpkin away – remember to toss it into your compost heap.

Finally, instead of passing out candy – hand out “earth friendly” things. Pencils, fun erasers or sidewalk chalk are great candy alternatives. Or, to really help beautify the planet – pass out seeds that the little trick or treaters can plant.

The leaves are falling and the air is crisp. With a new school year beginning, we all know what that means – school fundraisers! How to GREEN Your Halloween

Going Green is something we can all attempt to do - all the time! With Halloween and the rest of the holidays coming up - it's time to think about what you can do to help save our resources. This Halloween - use these handy tips to keep make HALLOWWEEN GREEN!

Tip 1: Ditch the car an get out and walk! Do not drive around the neighborhood or from house to house. Park the car and walk with the kids as they trick or treat through the neighborhood.

Tip 2: Light up the night responsibly. If you use flashlights, power them with rechargeable batteries. Also opt for other, greener options like LED flashlights, glow sticks, and solar-powered lights that you can carry or wear.

Tip 3: Use reusable and eco-friendly trick-or-treating bags. The old pillowcase standby is always a good choice, as are small canvas tote bags decorated for Halloween. Or, transform an old plastic bucket or pail into a fun candy collecting container.

Tip 4: Did you know you can wear eco-friendly costumes? This tip is two benefits in one - saving resources - AND saving money! Simply rent, borrow from friends or just dive into your closet and see what clothes could create an awesome costume and not only does it save some resources - it cost much less!

Tip 5: Say no to litter. Keep neighborhoods clean and make sure your kids don't drop candy wrappers as they trick or treat. If you see someone else has dropped wrappers, pick them up and dispose of them properly.

Tip 6: Recycle and repurpose what you can. Most candy wrappers are not recyclable so they usually get tossed in the trash. See what other fun options you can come up with before throwing them away, such as making a candy wrapper collage.

Tip 7: Recycle all that extra candy... Give some candy to the less fortunate, or mail to the local shelter. A great idea is to get the kids involved and decorate a candy box and mail it to our troops overseas.

Tip 8: Make full use of your entire pumpkin by roasting the seeds, turning the innards into soups or pies, and composting the jack-o-lantern carcass when you're done.

Tip 9: Keep it simple. When you're buying treats to give out, choose items that come in a minimum amount of packaging. Some folks skip the candy altogether in favor of use-able treats like pencils, pens, funky erasers and even nickels!

Raising Awareness: Ocean Acidification

What people DON'T know - is that we are slowly destroying life in our ocean from burning fossil fuels. It's odd - because a lot of our planet's environmental, ecological and atmospheric problems are are due to things that people DON'T know.

Seed Sucker, Inc. thinks it's VITAL to spread awareness about issues around our world - and we stumbled across this awesome movie featuring narration by Sigourney Weaver.

Please take a few moments to watch Acid Test, (below) produced by NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) and directed by David Hinerfield. It was created to raise awareness about the widely unknown problem of ocean acidification, which is a direct threat to life in the seas, and also the health of the entire planet and mankind. Ocean acidification is similar to global warming in that it is the result of too much carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere. Acid Test originally premiered on Discovery Planet Green last month.

Seed Sucker, Inc - is about raising environmental awareness, and providing a product using as many green resources as possible. Our organic t-shirts have an environmental message, and are made from 70% Bamboo and 30% Organic Cotton.

While our messages are mostly about trees and seeds (including our name) and we might not seem to address air or water pollution or oceanic environmental issues - we must not forget our beautiful oceans - which cover over three-quarters of our planet and account as the major power to create life, and sustain life.

We address many of these issues on our environmental information website, and have many new designs and messages planned for our shirts.

Seed Sucker will be in ROCKWALL participating in the ART FEST that's been going on there for over 30 years! Most of the revenue from the fair goes toward scholarships for high school seniors, with the remaining proceeds going to help other organizations and individuals who have a need.

Arlington Eco Fest
The Seed Sucker team can be in two places at once!! While part of the team is living the artistic life in Rockwall, the other half will be at Levitt Pavilion/Founder’s Plaza in Downtown Arlington. We'll be doing our part to promote environmental awareness! We'll be among other local businesses showing off our hip-organic apparel and there will be tons of resources for green and environmentally friendly products.

How To Pick A Fundraiser For Your School or Organization

Is your school or organization doing the same'ole fund raiser this year? Why not try something different? No, I didn't say Difficult... I said Different!

Isn't it time to get the kids excited and back into raising money for THEIR own school, sport league or organization?

This year, be a leader in the world of fund raising and start selling items that are worthwhile, meaningful, educational, AND profitable!

When planning a Fund Raiser, ask yourself these questions...

1. What is our financial goal this year?
2. What is our demographic? This is very important when selecting the right event to raise money and be successful.
3. What fund raisers promote products that will excite and encourage student participation?
4. Is there a fundraiser that will increase parents support and involvement?
5. Is this an event that could possible gain local media press by helping the community?

Remember, fund raising should be enjoyable and fun, not dreadful! If there is meaning behind the products that your kids sell, then it's a win-win for everyone involved.
